September 15, 2022

Gifu is located almost in the center of Japan, surrounded by 7 other prefectures. The topography of the region is very rich in natural environment. The Hida region with its high mountain, covered in snow all winter long. Mino region has 3 rivers that flow through.

Nagara River is one of the most clear streams known as one of the best 100 bodies of water in Japan. Known here are the Cormorant fishing or Ukai. Done also on the Kiso River. Only the Masters or the Usho are the Imperial Fishermen of the Household Agency. This is done from May 11 through Oct. 15 except for the day of the full moon. The Usho wore solid black from head to toe , wearing a skirt made from straw around their waist. The boatsman handles the boat, while the Usho has in their hands with 10 or so ropes with the cormorants strung on them. While this is done during the evening, torches are lit above the front bow of the Ubune ( boat ) to guide the passage and attract the fish, the Usho taps on the side of the boat while they let the birds dive into the water. The rope is around the bird’s neck so they do not swallow the large Ayu ( sweetfish ), only allowing them to swallow the small ones.
Reservations are a must, the fishing starts around 6:00pm.

Takayama Region, known for its Sanmachi Suji, is lined with wooden merchants’ homes in the heart of the Japanese Alps. Also known for the Sanno Matsuri, the presentation of the spectacular floats catches the tourist’s eyes.

Shirakawa is a village located in the Ono district best known for being the site of the Shirakawa-go. A small traditional village known for their Gassho-zukuri, meaning Hands in Prayer. The shape of the rooftop looks like a Buddist monk’s hands in prayer form. On the top floor of the homes are where silkworms are cultivated. Thatched roof homes which are one of UNESCO World Heritage sites. A place that can be enjoyed all year around. A fairytale atmosphere, something you should not miss while in Japan. During the winter months the entire region is covered in snow, a very picture perfect sight.
Early November there is water spraying done by the fire department in order to protect the hay from any fire. This is one of the ways the people preserve these homes.
