Coming to Japan, the best way to see and feel the place is traveling by public transportation. The subways, trains, trolley ( trams), ferry and the taxis. All very easy to travel on and much of the directions written in English.
Yes , we still have the trolley, before and after the war, they ran around all over Tokyo. Today there are only 2 lines left, Toden Arakawa line that runs from Arakawa to Waseda in Shinjuku. The other is the Tokyu Setagaya line, running from Shimotakaido to Sangenjaya. Both a pleasant ride letting you to view all different sites of the residential areas.
Except for the trolley and ferry’s you can purchase the SUICA or the PASMO to get a ride on public transportation, yes even the taxis.
The trains are very kind to the seniors, pregnant mothers and handicapped. There are Priority Seats in every car. All marked on the windows in the area and on the station platforms.
Enjoy the public transportation while in Japan.
